Letter Fifty-Two from the Lovely Lady Lena

The word of the week is…. WAHNSINN. (marvelous, splendid, unbelievable, superb.) It was wahnsinn going on exchanges with Sister Rasmussen (more to come), and wahnsinn surprising the mission president’s wife for her birthday, and our musical number turned out to be wahnsinn. And did you know? Marzahn spelled backwards is Wahnsinn. Nah, jk it’s actually gullible.

The Exchange. If you are a long time follower of this blog, then you should know by now who Sister Rasmussen is. We were MTC companions, trained together in Dresden, and reunited here in Marzahn (Berlin). She is one of my closest friends and I wouldn’t trade her for all the american pop tarts in the world. On Thursday, almost exactly a year to the date we became MTC comps, we were able to go on an exchange. (That pretty much means, our companions spent the day together and we spent the day together.)We started the day by meeting with a less active member. She was super busy preparing a wedding book (see terrifying photo) but we were able to bring a bit of peace to her morning with the scriptures. (amazing how they do that right?!) We then met with a man who is a real life Iron Man. He has this machine hooked up to his chest because twice a year he dies and it revives him. He just DIES. Crazy stuff. Needless to say, he loved the plan of salvation and the part about getting a perfect body, and he accepted our baptism invite. He even wrote it in his planner with a giant heart. We ended the day by desperately calling everyone to come to Institute. One guy said he was going clubbing, so he invited us to drinks. I told him we don’t drink alcohol #rejected.

Surprise Party. Our favorite mission president’s wife had the big 5-0 birthday so the secret party planning committee got together and planned something. A group of us met at the church and hid under the benches. Someone called her and said that a missionary was sick, hit their head, and to hurry and come to the church. When she walked in a musical number ensued (Like An Angel Passing Through My Room, do you know that song?) and at the end of the song we all popped out from under the benches and surprised her! We then made our way over to the gym and ate Russian honey cake. She described it best when she said ‘I can only think of two words. Interesting. and….different.’ Another Elder described the event as follows ‘dear diary, today I hid under benches with Sisters and ate cake. I love being a missionary.’ Das stimmt.

Musical number. Our choir director here has the most amazing voice, but even better, she has the most amazing talent for directing people who can’t sing. She somehow takes a group of misfit members and turns us into an Mormon Tabernacle Choir. This week we sang a beautiful rendition of ‘For the Beauty of The World’ in Sacrament meeting. The whole time I kept thinking about how wonderful it was to see her find our true inner potential. Then I thought of God. We are not perfect humans or singers, but he somehow finds the way to make our lives into beautiful operas IF we let him. There’s some food for thought for you.

     Now, go be W A H N S I N N. love sister helzer
