Letter Sixty-Five from the Lovely Lady Lena

Things I lost this week in Germany:

1. My Letter.¬†I received a letter from Mama Helzer, but didn’t want to rudely read it while I was on exchange, so I just stuck it in my folder and we went out to do survey finding. Somewhere along the road of asking people if they know where their ancestors came from, it fell out. I never even got to read the precious words!!! Sorry Mom, I know you said you weren’t going to write me anymore, but one last letter would be greatly appreciated ūüôā¬†Actually that goes for everyone. My birthday is coming up on October 3rd and I would love if everyone sent a letter to the mission office.¬†I will be there on my birthday and it would be a dream come true to be flooded with letters or post cards. *hint hint* *actually not a hint, I’m being pretty obvious right here’*
2. My Pride.¬†On the way home from an exchange, I noticed two deaf people signing on the busy bus. I looked up at Sister Miller and we just knew we had to talk with them. We aren’t learning German Sign Language for nothing! So I breathed in and whispered to myself¬†’10 seconds of insane courage.’¬†I walked to the aisle where I could sign to either of them. I first waved down the man and very nervously signed i know sign language and talk to people about God.The guy did not want my card and was NOT impressed and at this point¬†the whole crowded bus is staring me down, but I turned to the other side and signed to the girl the same thing. She was friendly and took my card, but seriously, an awkward situation. Then I just walked back to the middle of the bus and Sister Miller and I had to hold in our laughter for the rest of the journey. I could have cut the awkwardness with a butter knife, but hey, it was worth it to not take counsel from my fears.¬†
3. My Hair.¬†Sister Miller and I went to get our haircuts and although I very specifically said ‘no bangs. not too many layers. not short.’ the stylist most have thought it was opposite day and I walked out of there with a combination of 70’s Model and Mom hair. Sister Miller and I were not pleased and felt really down on ourselves. We decided we might as well take a photo shoot to remember the day we got german blow outs, because let’s be real, laughter is the best medicine. (and hair growing pills. that seems like a really great alternative at this point.) Turns out, our mom hair is actually MAGIC hair. We were able to find 6 new investigators this week, and one due to our fashion shoot to find.
4. My Safety.¬†Ever since I got this magic hair, Chemnitz Creepers have been coming out of the wood works. This week a man at the train station blew me a big ol’ kiss and said if he was younger he would marry me. Then as we waited for the bus, a guy who looked like he had just walked off of the set of the Walking Dead came up and stood inches away from me. He asked if I would help escort him across the street that he had literally just crossed to talk with me. I politely refused and Sister Miller and I moved to look at the bus times. He followed and then told me it was his birthday. He asked if I would hug him for his birthday and opened up his zombie arms. Sister Miller and I sprinted away and as we turned the corner 3 younger men began cat calling us. It was movie timing! Oh and get this. The next day we saw the Zombie man AGAIN. He followed us as we went to get our fatty fix of chocolate. We snuck away and I took this picture of him from the safety of the tram. (achtung! achtung! don’t worry family, I really am safe here. This was just a weird occurences due to the magic hair.)¬†
Despite loosing all these things, this week was seriously wonderful. The work is progressing more than ever. I love seeing the Lord’s mighty hand in the work of salvation here in Germany!
Love,
Sister Helzer
