Letter Thirty-Three from the Lovely Lady Lena

Starting this week’s posting off with a big shoutout to the YSA girls in Cairns, Australia! I hope you aren’t all melting down there. Please send my love back to the Innisfail branch. danke schön!

Where to begin…where to begin? Sister Hansen and I have decided to choose a different country for every week and do things that represent it. It’s our Hansen and Helzer World Tour. This week was J A P A N. We did Tae Kwon Do for morning exercise, sang pokemon songs, ate on the ground, bowed a lot, and attached a Japanese girl to our phone. This coming week is I T A L Y. I’m mostly stoked about all the food plans we have to celebrate that. The week after that is I N D I A. so if anyone has a good Naan bread recipe, feel free to send it to me! alena.helzer@myldsmail.net
Many of our appointments got canceled last minute on us, including the one with our dear Frau G. No worries though, that just meant we had a lot of time for faithful finding. In missionary work, everything is a case of good, better, and best. Faithful finding was definitely a case of best. We planned the night before to go to three different dorfs at specific times. In our first village we were able to find 2 new investigators out of our goal of 4.  We were so happy and energetic about the success we were seeing. Our 2nd village didn’t seem to offer us anything, but we knew there was a reason we had to be there.(aside from finding this cool hipster house.) We saw a man looking out his top window and we started yelling….errr, speaking to him. He seemed to have no interest but took our card. We left that city with less excitement as we came with, but were none the less pleased with our efforts.
Halfway into our time at the third city, we received a text. The window man said he wanted to meet with us! We called him back and he said he would even drive to meet with us at the church in Schwarzenberg. We were naturally ecstatic! We knew that we had to go finding in that city, but we just didn’t know why. It was great to see the ‘why’ unfold before our very eyes. We are not always blessed with the fruit of our labours, but that doesn’t make them any less sweet. We learn from the scriptures that after tribulation come blessings. It is certainly not easy to walk around adorable little German villages looking for people willing to listen, but the heavenly blessings that come from this work make it so worth it.
I recently studied how we can obtain heavenly blessings from the example of a young man in Matt.19. He asked Jesus how he could inherit the Kingdom of God to which Jesus replied that he needed to keep the commandments. The young man said he was already doing that. Jesus then gave him a higher law and told him he needed to sell what he has, give it to the poor, and follow Christ. The young man left, feeling ‘sorrowful’ because he had great possessions. He could not bear to leave his earthly treasures for those found in heaven. How often do we allow our worldly treasures to blind us of our heavenly potential? I for one, do not want to be ‘sorrowful’ over such a choice. I want to find joy in the decision to leave any worldly glory for the opportunity to follow Christ. In verse 29, Jesus says ‘With God, all things are possible.’ I know that to be true! All things are possible: from not getting fat in Germany to finding those willing to listen.
I hope that gives you something to think about! Have a superb week y’all!
Love,
Sister Helzer

mermaid hair! I was remenescing (spell check) about the good ol' days of swimming with the Mermaids of The Great Salt Lake and decided to do Mermaid hair in honor of them. And in honor of my dear friend Hannah who took their photos. She is going into the MTC this week!
