Letter Twenty-One from the Lovely Lady Lena

Last week my friend Jake (serving in Sapporo Japan) sent me his weekly family letter with this story inside:

We felt like we needed to go visit a nearby Recent Convert named Yokoinai Kyodai. Well that was our guidance. When we got there his apartment smelt like alcohol and smoke. He came to the door and asked us why we came today. He asked us how did we know how to visit him today. Well… He was actually angry. Not just because he was drunk, but because he just lost all of his money spending it at a Pachinko (slot machines in Japan) He didn’t want us to come it but we somehow made it in. We talked and testified for about 20 minutes. It ended up with him saying “I’m done”. He said he felt too much pressure and can’t handle all of the commandments. He hasn’t been praying or reading the Book of Mormon and he said he his is quitting  He then said don’t come back and made us leave. That was when I lost it. I testified the pee out of him. (Literally though… he has bladder paralysis so he carries his pee in a bag everywhere with him and when I started testifying he started peeing…) I told him about the power of repentance and how amazing the atonement it. I dont think I have ever testified so hard.

I was in tears from laughing so hard. As missionaries, we meet some of the most unique children of God. I love it! I live for it! This story gave me an idea. Everyone has hilarious (yet wonderful) stories if they serve a mission. If you or someone you know has a great story, send it to me and it could end up on my blog! Pictures are a bonus too! I love hearing stories like this about wonderful people and testimonies and other missionary jarb. And I assume you like hearing my stories as well. After all, that is why you are here and still reading. So let me share some of them from this week!
Tuesday we had an appointment with Frau G. She came out with a surprise for us…this giant basket filled with food! And then she  made us a plum cake to take home. All of this must have weighed like 50 pounds (everything is not included in the picture. she seriously gave us a year supply of food storage it seemed.) Our car is broken so we had walked and taken the bus. Sister Hansen and I walked an hour that day with all of this stuff. Needless to say, we did NOT feel guilty chowing down on all the chocolate after that work out.

We also met with Frau G later that week to learn how to cook. I took intense notes and then ate an intense amount of apple cake. 5 pieces to be exact. I’d say it is okay because we walk so much except… we actually got our car back!

On Wednesday we took a train to Freiberg to pick up our car and then we were allowed to go to the Temple. That is a rare occurrence and was quite a sweet treat. I just love the Temple to infinity and beyond. It is so beautiful and a great spiritual protein shake. I should pray for our car to break more often heh heh heh…

The new missionary came which meant we had to pull a classic prank. Because the Elders live above us, they live with a member named Bjorn. He looks missionary aged and that was crucial for our prank. We pretended that Bjorn was a missionary from the Czech Republic who could barely speak english or german. He was really disobedient and just lived at the house but didn’t really do missionary work. When the Elders arrived home, Bjorn was in a suit with his name tag on listening to really loud music. Elder H tried being nice and talking to Bjorn but he pretended he couldn’t understand much of anything. Then we called pretending to be our mission president. Bjorn talked with us in broken german about how he wanted to go home. Elder H was quite worried for the elder, but he believed every little bit! He tried to comfort a crying Bjorn but then Bjorn just started laughing and confessed who he was. Hahhaha. I thought it played out nicely if I do say so myself!

Bjorn is just one of the many great members here. Lucy (picture enclosed) is another! Warning to all future missionaries: there will be a town that you serve in, in which you fall in love with, and the members adore you, and you adore the members, and it will break your heart to leave, but it is worth it. LUCKILY, i still have at least 5 more weeks here.

And now I depart and leave you with good tidings of glad joy. Still waiting on those High School Musical Lyrics! 🙂
Love,
Sister Helzer

P.S. shoutout to my two best friends in London. If you haven’t checked out Sarah’s blog, you ought to! Everything is more beautiful through her eyes.
