Letter Twenty-Seven from the Lovely Lady Lena

Going home a year from today. Gasp. Let’s just pretend that didn’t happen! I am enjoying myself all too much here, especially during this Christmas season. Everyone window has a Schwibbogen inside to light the night, and pyramids with candles are on every table. The bakeries make the streets smell of fresh Stollenbrot and other Christmas specialities. Warm kinderpunsch carts keep calling my name. Yes, Christmas is quite splendid here, but the week didn’t start off too sweet.
On Tuesday we said buh bye to the Elders and began to take over their program. It feels like just yesterday that Sister Hansen and I came to Schwarzenberg to open it for sisters, and now we are reopening the other program. Busy, busy busy! I’m just grateful I get to do it with Sister Hansen by my side. #powerteam
I’m also glad we got to celebrate Thanksgiving together. You are probably dying to know what 2 Americans did on the other side of the world. Ate food. We made an ‘american feast’ and topped it off with a Twinkie! Then we made a ‘Sister Hansen and Helzer Thanksgiving Special’ and recorded ourselves performing a few musical numbers. Real mature, I know.
As soon as our Thanksgiving festivals ended, we decorated our apartment with snowflakes and advent calendars. We treated ourselves to a Ritter Sport advent calendar. Y. U. M. Hello Christmas Kilos! We also went to a Christmas Market for some quality finding time. We wanted to use the approach of talking about the real meaning of Christmas with people as they strolled the lovely lit streets. Our approach wasn’t as effective as we thought, most people just wanted to shop in peace. Soon it got cold, and wet, and before I knew it I looked like a hobo in my grandma coat. Some people could easily take this moment to be discouraged and downtrodden, not us! Sister Hansen and I continued to be our bubbly selves and marched around the Christmas Market like giggly school girls. Before we knew it, people started to notice. They started to smile. Some even came up to talk to us. The situation was quickly flipped around and it turned out to be a great experience (with great photos!) That is my inspirational story for you. Enjoy this Christmas season to it’s fullest! If you can bring one person closer to Christ by your smile, then you have been successful.
I hope everyone had a splendid first Advent, and I wish you a grand 2nd Advent! I spent it with my brother’s identical twin. We read German fairytales (this girl sucked her thumbs so much that they simply walked away!) and sang Christmas songs.
Until next week,
Sister Helzer

now it's just Sister Hansen and I to take care of Schwarzenberg (and surrounding towns... I swear we have the largest area)

We spent our first advent eating lots of treats, singing German Christmas Karaoke, and reading terrifying German fairytales.
