Letter Twenty-Three from the Lovely Lady Lena

I AM TYPING THIS EMAIL IN A RAGING SNOWSTORM AND ALL THE BUILDINGS ARE ON LOCKDOWN TREES ARE TIPPING OVER DUE TO SO MUCH SNOW ITS A CRAZY BLIZZZZZZARD. Just kidding, but now I got your attention.
This week was simply wonderful. On Wednesday we made the 6 hour travel to Berlin for our mission tour. We had a train layover in a city called Dessau. One of the Elders used to serve here and he mentioned that the Bauhaus was right by the train station. Now most of you probably wonder what the Bauhaus is. It is an influential building in art history. If I had more time, I’d give details but feel free to google it. No one else knew what it was, nor were they interested in seeing it, but I knew this would be my only opportunity. My great companion agreed to run with me to Bauhaus so I could snap some pictures and be back for our next train. I know I looked ridiculous as I ran with all my bags in a skirt, but I got my picture! #bauhauspride
Let us return to the train. Or one of the many that we rode. I have a problem with german train bathrooms. They all lock differently and often I can’t figure out how. I needed to use the bathroom which is located in the center of the train with seats facing it. I went it and pushed what I thought was the lock button but what actually opened the automatic door. So I stood there bowing and waving to the crowd of people wondering what the crazy american was trying to do. I couldn’t figure out how to lock the door so I risked my life and used the bathroom unlocked praying that no one would push the automatic door button. I survived, but I’m still not a fan of train bathrooms.
When we got to Berlin, we had some time to explore. That exploring included eating the best pizza ever. Boy have I missed pizza! And cities. I loved my 24 hours in Berlin! I love people watching, not being the person that people watch. So ist das Lebens!
The mission tour was phenomenal. Elder Kearon and Fingerle of the 70 came to speak with us. They were simply inspiring and I left that meeting on cloud 9. One of the best parts was singing Lead Kindly Light in crescendo. President chose one missionary to stand up and start singing and then he would gradually point at people to stand up and sing with. By the end of the song we were all standing and singing in the most beautiful crescendo. It was a great way to show that life gets better, we should live our life in crescendo, always increasing. We should also help others live their lives in crescendo. By the way, if you don’t know what crescendo means, don’t feel stupid. I didn’t know what it meant before my mission.
During the mission tour, Sister Hansen and I were asked to come up and give a little role play. We were instructed to look annoyed, sad, and bored as we approached Elder Kearon on the street. Sister Hansen had a hard time with this because she is always smiling. I just yawned and kept looking at my watch. I’m not doing a good job describing it, but it was funny. We were chosen because everyone knows us as the happy companionship. We are happy missionaries and why not?! Missionary work is all about making others happy and in order to do that you have to be happy yourself! If you are on a mission right now and you’re not happy, turn that frown upside down. Count your blessings (like being able to see my Dresden friends). It may not be easy, but it is certainly fulfilling.
I saw so many wonderful miracles this week as well but my time is coming to an end. I guess I will just leave that as a hook for you to read next week’s email.
Until then,
Sister Helzer
funny bad german line of the week: I bore my testimony on Sunday and I accidently said that the mission tour was like a ‘shot of liquor’. Whoops.
